There has been chatter in the webmaster community recently, and the mobile-only test tools have reported substantial SERP swings. It is possible that Google is doing mobile first indexing related tests.

It appears that there has been a significant update on the 7th of October that lasted until the 9th of October. Both webmaster community and the tracking tools have noticed certain fluctuations (with one exception, Rank Ranger). However, there is no conclusive evidence as to what this update will affect.
